How ED works.

ED or erectile dysfunction is diagnosed in men that experience problems with achieving and maintaining a stable erection. In order to understand the mechanism of ED it’s necessary to know how erection works and what may go wrong. Two chambers (corpora cavernosa) that run along the length of the penis are filled with spongy tissue that contains veins, arteries and smooth muscles. When sexual stimulation occurs the brain of a man starts sending impulses to the nerves causing the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax. The blood fills the chambers, which results in the penis expanding and increasing in size. With the muscles of the penis contracting the blood inflow stops and the blood starts flowing back, so the man loses the erection (normally this happens after ejaculation). Erectile dysfunction occurs when this sequence of events gets interrupted. Any of the «chain links» affected may result failure to get an erection or keep it for a long time.

It has been established that about 70% of all cases of ED have to do with such diseases as diabetes, chronic alcoholism, atherosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, kidney disease, or a neurologic disease. Other possible causes of ED include the person’s lifestyle – excessive weight, smoking, lack of exercise all contribute to the development of this condition especially as men become older. Only three oral drugs are currently approved by the American Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of erectile dysfunction – Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. All of these medicines work by a similar mechanism to cause erections, but there are subtle differences in how long the drug works and how quickly an erection can be achieved.
